Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the process of sponsoring my spouse?
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor your spouse on the basis of Inland Sponsorship, for couples who are already living together in Canada, and Outland Sponsorship, for spouses living outside Canada.
  • What are the eligibility requirements to become a sponsor?
A sponsor must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, provide financial stability to the sponsored family members, and not be a part of any defaulter list.
  • Is there any minimum income threshold to sponsor family members?
There is no minimum income requirement to sponsor spouses, partners, or dependent children. Nevertheless, the sponsoring citizen must fulfill a certain calculated MNI (Minimum Necessary Income) set by IRCC for the past three consecutive tax years.
  • Is a sponsored spouse eligible for a work permit while their immigration application is in process?
To be eligible to obtain a work permit, a spouse must be physically present in Canada and have applied under the Inland Spouse Sponsorship program. Furthermore, the applicant can apply for an open work permit until the time they get a final decision on their Canadian PR application.
  • What documentation must be submitted to prove the relationship's authenticity to immigration authorities?
The IRCC requires photos, a marriage certificate, a communication record, joint bank accounts, financial records, flight tickets, utility bills, a joint lease or agreement, and proof of recognition from family, friends, and community people.
  • Is it allowed to sponsor a spouse or family member while living outside Canada?
Yes. Only Canadian citizens are permitted to sponsor a spouse or family member from abroad, and they must provide evidence of their intention to return to Canada once the sponsored person obtains permanent residency. However, the permanent residents must be physically living in Canada to be eligible to sponsor.
